Coulter blades are the disc blades' quieter cousin. They mount on no-till planters, drills, and vertical tillage rigs — cutting a slot for the seed unit instead of turning over soil. Four common profiles cover most of the field.

Smooth coulter

Plain edge, no waves. Slices a clean vertical slot through residue and soil. Common on classic no-till planters — matches the pattern many John Deere and Case IH planters shipped with from the factory.

Best for: firm ground, moderate residue, planters where the row unit does the seedbed prep.

Wavy coulter

Broad, gentle waves around the edge. Cuts and lifts a wider band of soil than smooth, which gives the seed row a slight tilth boost. Not as aggressive as ripple.

Best for: firm ground with light residue where you want a bit of extra loose soil in the seed row.

Ripple coulter

Tight, sharp corrugations. More aggressive than wavy — fluffs a narrow band of soil ahead of the seed unit and handles more residue.

Best for: heavier residue, cool soils where you want a small tilth zone to warm faster.

Turbo coulter

Deeply-fluted, aggressive residue cutter. Sometimes called "13-wave" or "25-wave" depending on flute count. Chews residue in high-trash conditions where a smooth or wavy would skate.

Best for: vertical tillage rigs (Sunflower 6631, Great Plains Turbo-Till, Case IH TigerMate), heavy corn stalks, or first pass after CRP.

Wave count matters

You'll see coulters spec'd by wave count — 8-wave, 13-wave, 25-wave. More waves = smaller waves = more aggressive residue cutting. Match to your existing gang so all coulters run the same pattern.

Bolt pattern matters more

Coulters mount via bolt holes, not axles. Common bolt patterns:

  • 4-hole — most Case IH, Krause, and older John Deere
