Every year we get calls: "My blades are worn but not shot — can I get them sharpened or reconditioned?" Answer: technically yes, but the math almost never works. Here's why, and the narrow cases where reconditioning does pay.
What reconditioning involves
- Edge grinding. Run each blade against a grinding wheel to restore the sharp edge. Takes 2-5 minutes per blade in a shop setup.
- Wobble correction. Worn blades often have wobble at the edge from uneven wear. Correcting takes either heat + hammer work or a hydraulic press. Skilled work, 5-15 minutes per blade.
- Notch refacing. If the notches are worn back, they can be re-cut with a plasma torch or waterjet. Rarely done — usually a blade with worn notches is retired instead.
- Diameter is not restorable. Once the blade has worn from 24" down to 22", nothing brings back the missing steel. Blade diameter is a hard-retire signal.
The math
A carbon-steel 24" blade costs $95 new. A shop willing to recondition might charge $30-50 per blade for edge grinding + wobble correction. That's about 30-50% of new-blade cost. If reconditioning gets you another 200-300 acres out of a blade that would have been retired, that's $0.15-0.25/acre — not much better than new blades at $0.10-0.15/acre when new blades give you 700-900 acres per blade.
Plus you're paying labor costs on old material that will fail sooner than the labor payback timeline.
Where reconditioning does make sense
- Custom-blade replacements. If your machine takes an obsolete blade that no supplier stocks, reconditioning may be your only option to keep running until you replace the machine.
- Vintage restorations. Restoring an old disc harrow for a specific reason (antique show, farm family heirloom) — reconditioning the existing blades is period-correct where new aftermarket isn't.
- Small acreage with irregular use. An older 3-point disc harrow used a few days a year on 40 acres — a reconditioned blade that lasts 50 more acres is cheap enough to justify.
Where reconditioning does NOT make sense
- Commercial or high-acre operations. The labor cost times the number of blades outweighs the new-blade savings. Just buy new.
- Blades below minimum diameter. Reconditioning can't restore diameter. If your blade is at the wear limit, retire it.
- Blades with cracked edges or hairline fractures. A cracked blade is a safety issue in service. Retire, don't recondition.
- Rusted or pitted blades. Rust pits weaken the steel. Grinding the edge doesn't fix the corrosion damage.
DIY sharpening — worth it?
Some operators grind the edge themselves with a bench grinder. Rarely worth the time on a full-gang basis, but for a single blade you're trying to nurse through the end of a season, it can buy a few days. Two rules:
- Don't change the edge angle. Match the original taper.
- Don't overheat. Grinding turns steel blue = you've just annealed the edge and made it soft. Keep water handy.
How to tell if your blades are worth reconditioning vs. replacing
Three checks:
- Diameter. Is the blade at least 1" above the manufacturer's minimum retire diameter? If not, retire.
- Edge integrity. Look for cracks, deep pits, or missing notch teeth. If any = retire.
- Wobble. Set the blade flat on a bench. If the wobble exceeds 1/16" at the edge = retire (correction rarely holds).
Two of those three are "retire" — just order new blades.
