Buying a used disc harrow for your tractor? First question is width — too wide and you're slugging along at 3 mph in third gear; too narrow and you're leaving productivity on the table. Rough rule: 6-10 HP per foot of tandem-disc width in typical Midwestern conditions. Offset discs are heavier and want more HP per foot. Here's the honest match.
Tandem-disc harrow width by tractor HP
- 75-100 HP: 8-12 ft harrow
- 100-150 HP: 12-18 ft harrow
- 150-200 HP: 18-24 ft harrow
- 200-275 HP: 24-30 ft harrow
- 275-350 HP: 30-36 ft harrow
- 350+ HP: 36-40+ ft harrow
Adjustments — this rule is not exact
- Heavy soil, wet season, deeper tillage: Add 20-30% HP per foot. A 100 HP tractor is comfortable on a 12 ft harrow in light silty soil but overloaded on the same 12 ft harrow in heavy wet clay.
- Blade diameter matters. Bigger blades cut deeper and generate more draft. A 24" blade at 5" cut depth draws roughly 20-30% more than a 20" blade at 4" depth.
- Tillage speed. Running faster (over 6 mph) draws more. Vertical tillage tools are engineered to run 7-9 mph — factor that into HP needs.
- Field slope. On rolling ground, add HP for the uphill pulls.
Offset-disc adjustments
Heavy offset discs (Case IH 496, JD 610/620, Rome TAWH) cut deeper than tandems and want 10-15 HP per foot. A 100 HP tractor is comfortable behind a 7-10 ft offset. A 200 HP tractor pulls a 14-18 ft offset.
Vertical tillage — different rules
VT tools are shallow (2-3" cut) but run fast (7-9 mph). Draft per foot is lower than a deep-tandem, but the total HP need scales with width and speed together. Rough rule: 8-12 HP per foot of VT width, but budget more if you want to run at the high end of the speed range.
PTO HP vs. drawbar HP
Tandem and offset discs are drawbar-pulled — they don't take PTO power. Match to the tractor's drawbar HP, which is typically 80-85% of the PTO HP on newer tractors. A 200 PTO HP tractor might have 170 drawbar HP. Use the drawbar number when sizing.
What happens if you're under-tractored
- Slugs down under load — you'll drop from 5 mph to 3-4 mph on uphills or heavy patches
- Excessive wheel slip on the tractor
- Fuel consumption per acre goes up (working the engine hard at low ground speed)
- Wear on the tractor drivetrain increases
What happens if you're over-tractored
- Nothing bad, honestly. You just have unused capacity — the tractor pulls easily and burns less fuel per acre.
- If you're way over-tractored, the harrow may start to feel underdamped — check that the harrow frame is engineered for the pull force you're putting into it.
